| What is the Green Grid? |
Objectives | Why do we need it? |
How will it become a reality? |
• With the forecast expansion of Peterborough linked to the London-Stansted-Cambridge-Peterborough Growth Area it is essential to ensure that the infrastructure is in place to support these new communities. Not only for transport, health and education but also the green spaces for both people and nature.
• To complement the Government’s development plan for the region until 2021, the Green Grid will provide a strategy to ensure that Peterborough’s growth goes hand in hand with the protection and provision of quality green infrastructure.
• A comprehensive vision has been developed to improve the quality, quantity and connectivity of the region’s green spaces, and proposals have been put forward for several capital projects that can be realised in the short and medium term.
• By developing a planned Green Grid, existing sites can be protected and enhanced and new green spaces and corridors have been identified to service both the existing and proposed new developments.
The developed strategy will act as an important background document to inform the preparation of Peterborough City Council’s Local Development Framework. The strategy and action plan will also underpin funding bids from the Green Grid partners leading to the creation and enhancement of new and existing green spaces, green hubs, biodiversity sites and other green infrastructure across the Greater Peterborough area.
