How will it become a reality?

What does Peterborough’s Green Grid Strategy include and how will it be implemented?

The strategy has brought together a wide range of environmental and social data and has analysed this to identify gaps and opportunities in ecological and recreational networks. It then makes a number of recommendations for priority projects in and around Peterborough, including:
- Creation, enhancement and maintenance of high quality green spaces in particular where a gap in provision has been identified;
- Providing linkages and improved access to give people access to quality wildlife areas and open spaces close to where they live and work;
- Identify the potential creation of ‘new’ habitats and biodiversity features as well as establishing critical ecological links throughout the area;
- Establishing a funding stream to maintain current initiatives such as the Green Wheel and to provide support for the further implementation of the Green Grid Strategy.

All parties will have a role to play in shaping the Green Grid and so, establishing good working partnerships between developers, planners, landowners, conservationists and environmental groups as well as local people will be critical to its success.

A combination of different funding mechanisms will also be required to deliver the strategy and these will be co-ordinated by a steering group on behalf on the Green Grid Partnership.

In the long term the strategy will be approved by Peterborough City Council and will be used as a material planning consideration.
