Fletton Lake

Fletton Lake
At Fletton Lake three new wildlife ponds have been constructed at various locations around the site, designed to support wildlife including newts, frogs, water beetles, dragonflies and native aquatic plants including rare stoneworts. At the largest pond north of the main lake a large dipping platform has also been installed where visitors can get up close to wildlife.

A new bark chip path has been installed through the woodland along the western side of the lake and around the southern side of the lake a brick-dust surfaced path has also been laid to provide a safe, easy access route. This path leads to a new viewing platform at the southern tip of the lake where visitors can look back across the lake.

A bird watching hide has also been constructed near this path. This looks out towards four tern rafts on the lake. These have been designed to provide safe nesting sites for Common Terns and Ringed Plovers. These birds make a shallow scrape in the shingle on the rafts where they lay their eggs. In the centre of the lake they will be safe from preditors such as crows which can perch on nearby trees before taking the eggs.

Work has taken place on the islands in the lake to improve their wildlife value for birds. This has involved clearing areas of scrub to create a more diverse and interesting habitat for song birds to nest in.
